Participants spent a summer weekend at the Octagon House learning fabric printing techniques, including gelatin printing, flower pounding, and stenciling. Participants left with two completed projects: a tote bag and silk scarf, and a fabric piece for a small wall hanging.
Gelatin Printing
Gelatin was used as a large pad for printing and stamping.
Flower Pounding
Using a hammer, natural flower and leaf pigments were pounded into fabric.
Stenciling
Textile paints and commercial or original stencils were used to create designs. Blending and shading with textile paints was demonstrated.
The instructor was Nancy Bryant, a studio artist who lives in Oregon. In her studio, she creates art quilts, a line of scarves sold in several stores, and a small apparel line. You can view more of her work on her website, Alta Vista Studio.
